What do providers actually document about this?

Less than the industry implies, and the gap is worth knowing precisely.

Ramp shape is documented. Google’s sender guidelines say to “start with a low sending volume to engaged users, and slowly increase the volume over time,” that “the more email that you send, the more slowly you should increase sending volume,” and — the load-bearing sentence — that “immediately doubling previously sent volumes suddenly could result in rate limiting or reputation drops.” Doubling is the named anti-pattern, so any ramp step meaningfully below 2× is the documented-safe shape. Google also states that daily sending permits a faster ramp than weekly sending.

No provider publishes a day-by-day schedule. Not Google, not Microsoft, not Yahoo. Every “day 1: 5 emails, day 2: 8 emails” table you have seen is tooling-industry invention, not provider guidance.

Complaint rate is the one measured engagement signal. Google asks senders to keep spam rate below 0.10% and never to reach 0.30%, and exposes it through Postmaster Tools. Yahoo’s best practices set 0.3% and note it is calculated on mail delivered to the inbox. That is the whole published, numeric, sender-visible engagement surface.

Opens are observed but unweighted. Google advises unsubscribing recipients “who don’t open or read your messages,” which implies opens are seen — but publishes no weighting.

Content repetition. Gmail’s spam classification is a text model, and providers document generic content scoring. Message variety is the part of network design that matters most and gets the least attention.

Skipping the hard requirements. Warmup cannot fix an unauthenticated domain. Every sender, at any volume, must publish SPF or DKIM, have valid forward and reverse DNS on the sending IP, use TLS, and format messages to RFC 5322. Microsoft’s outbound guidance adds a structural rule with no reputation component at all: a sending domain with no A record and no MX record in public DNS is always routed through the high-risk delivery pool. No amount of peer mail changes that.

Platform policy. Google’s Workspace API user data and developer policy lists as a not-allowed use case “applications that use multiple accounts to abuse Google policies, bypass Gmail account limitations, circumvent filters and spam, or otherwise subvert abuse or safety restrictions.” That governs Gmail API scope access rather than SMTP, but it is an unambiguous statement of Google’s position on the practice — and some mailbox hosts prohibit warmup tooling in their own terms of service. Confusing warmup volume with capacity. A mailbox warmed to a comfortable rhythm is not a mailbox cleared to blast. Provider caps are separate and independent — Google Workspace allows 2,000 messages per user per day but only 100 recipients per message over SMTP; Microsoft enforces 30 messages per minute per mailbox and 10,000 recipients per day, and the per-minute throttle produces no bounce, only delay.

There is no published evidence that they do. Replies are referenced only as one of the interaction types feeding category classification for that particular recipient, never as a documented reputation metric. Complaint rate is the engagement signal with a real threshold and a real feedback path.

Can a warmup network get my mailbox blocked?
