How unsubscribe links work
Every campaign email gives the recipient a way to opt out, automatically — you never have to add anything by hand in the campaign editor. What you DO control is the style and the wording, both in Settings > Account. Full explainer: /documentation/unsubscribe-link-in-campaign-emails
What happens automatically:
- One quiet line is added at the end of every campaign email — small grey text reading '[your company address] · [your opt-out sentence]'. The address is left out if you haven't set one. (This line used to begin 'Sent by [your name]'; that prefix was removed, because your name is already in the From line and repeating it made the email look like a mailing)
- The opt-out sentence is yours to write — 4 to 120 characters in Settings > Account. It becomes the clickable text on the 'Unsubscribe link' style, or the reply instruction on the 'Reply to opt out' style. Leave it blank for the defaults: ‘Unsubscribe’, or ‘Reply “unsubscribe” to opt out’
- Put {{opt_out}} in your email body or signature to place that sentence exactly where you want it; the appended line then carries only your address. Leave the tag out and the full line is appended as usual
- One campaign can read differently from the rest — handy for a campaign in another language. In that campaign's Review & Launch step, choose 'Use different wording for this campaign' under 'How recipients opt out' and type its sentence; your other campaigns keep the workspace wording
- On the 'Unsubscribe link' style, mail apps can also show their own one-tap unsubscribe button next to your sender name. The 'Reply to opt out' style deliberately sends nothing for them to hang that button on, so your message isn't badged as a mailing — the visible sentence in the email is the way out, and replies asking to be removed are honoured automatically
- No configuration required — an opt-out is always present, for deliverability and compliance
When a prospect clicks unsubscribe:
- They are immediately removed from all active campaigns in your workspace
- Their status is set to 'unsubscribed' globally
- They are added to your suppression list automatically
- They will not receive any future campaign emails from your workspace
- Campaigns with 'Stop on Unsubscribe' enabled (default: ON) immediately stop the sequence
Viewing unsubscribed contacts:
- Go to your prospect list and filter by 'Unsubscribed' status
- Unsubscribed prospects remain in your database but are excluded from all sending
Compliance:
- This is required for CAN-SPAM and GDPR compliance
- Never manually re-add unsubscribed contacts to campaigns
- Every unsubscribe link is signed, so it cannot be forged or guessed by anyone else
